Art Conservation

BTS distributes products with a number of different applications for use in art conservation.   Our methods are focused on non-destructive or minimally-destructive techniques to ensure the work of art is maintained in the most pristine condition possible.  Some applications include:

  • Micro Support benchtop micromanipulators – Our benchtop systems provide for very precise sampling while ensuring that any modification is not visible to the naked eye.  
    • Some of the most useful applications with the Micro Support micromanipulator involves the isolation of a very small particle for isolation by another technique (e.g., FTIR, Raman, or another technique).    This application is described in the Steve’s Solutions article Micro Support Micromanipulator for Separation of Paint Layers in Trace Analysis.
    • The Micro Support micromanipulator may also be used to scrape material off a surface.  This is often used in industrial applications the scraping thin films off of a surface – these techniques can also be used for precise cleaning of a surface.  This application is described in the Steve’s Solutions article Particle and Defect isolation with a benchtop micromanipulator.
  • The Micro Support Axis Pro micromanipulator can be equipped with large-table options for works of art that are larger than the standard sample size used on these systems. 
  • For the molecular characterization of materials, Raman microscopy can often be used for non-destructive testing.  More information on these systems may be found on the Ostec Raman microscopes page.

Battery Materials

Thermal Conductivity, Thermal Diffusivity, and Anisotropy Measurements

Isolation of Particles in Battery Separator and General Particle Isolation

  • The Micro Support Axis Pro micromanipulator provides capabilities for precise particle isolation from a range of samples.  This system is particularly valuable for isolating particles that clog the pores of separator materials in Li-ion batteries.

Raman Microscopy of Cathode and Anode Materials

  • The degradation of cathode and anode materials can be well characterized by Raman microscopy and imaging. Specifically, the degradation of cathode materials can produce various cobalt oxides.  Overcharging can produce CoO2which can be detected by Raman microscopy.   For anodes, graphite degradation can be characterized by measuring the graphite D and G bands (both are Raman active).

Precise Sampling for Trace

  • Micro Support’s Axis Pro benchtop micromanipulator is a valuable tool for precise handling of trace samples.  The system permits probe movements smaller than what can typically be done by hand and includes full image and video capabilities to record all procedures of evidence handling.

Electrical Probing

  • Micro Support’s Quick Pro manipulator arms can be configured to provide four-point probing on a circuit. Each probe may be positioned with sub-micron accuracy. Benchtop Super-resolution Microscope for Sample Imaging

  • LIG Nanowise manufactures the Nanoro M benchtop super-resolution microscope. This system can provide optical images at greater than 100 micron spatial resolution without the need for an SEM. Further details on this system may be found on the Nanoro M Super Resolution Microscope page.

Elemental Analysis Using LIBS

  • Ostec manufactures a LIBS system for the rapid analysis of elemental composition in solids. LIBS is particularly well-suited to the measurement of light elements and the Ostec system also allows for sampling in a vacuum which is particularly valuable for measurements on sulfur. Benchtop micromanipulator for Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC) loading

Benchtop micromanipulator for grain separation

TEM Lift-Out With the Micro Support Benchtop Micromanipulator

  • TEM imaging is an extremely valuable tool for a wide range of materials. Samples are normally formed by FIB preparation in an SEM followed by lift-out. Traditionally, this lift-out process is performed inside the SEM chamber (in situ). However, this process takes up valuable chamber time since the lift-out process can be performed outside the chamber (ex situ).

MicroLEDs

MicroLEDs represent some of the most existing materials currently underdevelopment. As the pixel size of these systems decreases, the ability to rapidly assess the quality of microLEDs has become more and more challenging.

  • Attolight’s cathodoluminescence systems provide one of the best methods to assess the performance and structure of individual pixels as well as any defects concentrated near the edges or center of each pixel.
  • Research-grade measurements can be made on Attolight’s Allalin system and measurements on wafers may be performed on theee Attolight Santis system – information on these systems may be found on our Attolight Products page.

Process Monitoring

  • Near-IR Spectroscopy
    • ABB’s TALYS near-IR process system provides for excellent results in a wall-mounted system.  Information on the Talys may be found on the ABB TALYS ASP 500 page.

FT-IR and Raman Microscopy

  • Ostec offers FT-IR spectrometers, microscopes, and Raman systems for thee characterization of pharmaceutical materials.   In addition, Ostec’s handheld Raman systems may be used for incoming raw material ID applications.  In particular, Ostec’s 1064 nm handheld Raman provides superior analyses compared with 785 nm handheld systems that may exhibit fluorescence for some materials.

Failure Analysis/Particle Isolation

Photovoltaic Materials

Attolight cathodoluminescence tools are useful for characterizing photovoltaic materials. Cross sections of multilayer structures can be used to verify and assess the structure of a multilayer AlxGa1-xAs stack. Surface and sub-surface defects can also be located with this technique. Semiconductors
