Business Fundamentals for Scientists and Engineers

Scientists and engineers employ their technical expertise for the benefit of their company or organization.  Many of them naturally progress into positions where business concepts are needed for decisions on a daily basis.  Barnett Technical Services offers a course for scientists and engineers that will broaden their comprehension of business operations as it relates to their technical position.  This knowledge will enhance their role and expand their value within their organization.

The course is divided into a number of different modules:

  • Organizational Behavior and Leadership – Group dynamics – identify types of behavior and recognize how to deal with different personalities in the workplace; learn how to lead people and how to work with strong leaders.
  • Ethics, Incentives, and Controls – Most unethical behavior starts off as slight deviations in good behavior by good people.  This section discusses unethical behavior and how to avoid it.  Also includes what to do when confronted with unethical behavior.
  • Communication – Technical people possess great expertise in their field of work.  However, this value can be lost without the ability to communicate effectively.  This module discusses communication skills (written, oral, electronic) that can be used for different situations.
  • Innovation – Methods to work in and foster an innovative culture; includes how to manage innovation.
